Workshop Description
Taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings of the Applegate Valley, this workshop will give beginning and experienced painters alike the opportunity to explore the landscape with plein air painting. Working outdoors for the duration of the course, students will receive individualized attention while working in the field as well as participate in group discussions and critiques. Specific issues to outdoor painting will be addressed, such as portability of one’s setup, palette choices and color mixing as it relates to observational painting. Students will be encouraged to work quickly and loosely in oils or acrylic*, embracing the challenges of changing of weather and light unique to plein air painting. Phyllis also plans to demo for a short time each day so that students can witness how a painting might be developed over several sittings.

*Watercolor painters are welcome in this class, but watercolor technique will not be taught. The issues of color, composition etc. remain the same for all media.

Phyllis Trowbridge's first love is the landscape and she paints and draws outdoors year-round, attempting to translate a mood or feeling that the place and time evoke in her. Since 1993 she has been teaching painting and drawing at various school and workshops in Oregon including Portland Community College, Pacific Northwest College of Art, and Oregon College of Art and Craft.

She received her M.F.A. from American University in Washington D.C. in 1990 and her B.A. from Hamilton College in New York State in 1987 which included studying at Lacoste, France.

Phyllis has joined the arts community in Southern Oregon with her recent move to Ashland. Hummingbird is proud to add her to our fine roster of skilled workshop instructors.

Brushes: Acrylic and Oil painters: suggested brushes - Hog bristle brushes – round, flat or filberts - #10 or #12, #8 and/or #6, #4, #2 round. The important thing is to have at least 5 brushes of varying sizes from small to large. Students may want to purchase one or two white nylon or simulated sable brushes to experiment with as well.

Painting surfaces: Oil and Acrylic painters: Gessoed paper has the advantage of being adaptable to different sizes and formats right on location. If paper is chosen, students will need to have a painting board to attach it to. Gessoed paper is recommended over canvas textured painting pads. Stonehenge is a reasonably priced quality 100% rag paper. 140# watercolor paper can also be used. Gessoed masonite, stretched canvas or linen all work well. Inexpensive prepared canvas boards are not recommended. A suggested size range would be 9” x 12” to 20” x 24”, but this is up to individual preference. Students should always bring several surfaces to work on to each day. Another consideration for size – it is a good idea to have a few surfaces that are larger and smaller than the size you ordinarily work in – having more options can encourage us to open up to new ways of working.
