Phyllis Trowbridge's first love is the landscape and she paints and draws outdoors year-round, attempting to translate a mood or feeling that the place and time evoke in her. Since 1993 she has been teaching painting and drawing at various schools and workshops in Oregon including Portland Community College, Pacific Northwest College of Art, and Oregon College of Art and Craft. She received her M.F.A. from American University in Washington D.C. in 1990 and her B.A. from Hamilton College in New York State in 1987 which included studying at Lacoste, France.

Taking advantage of the beautiful surroundings of the Applegate Valley, this workshop will give beginning and experienced painters alike the opportunity to explore the landscape with plein air painting. Working outdoors for the duration of the course, students will receive individualized attention while working in the field as well as participate in group discussions and critiques. Specific issues to outdoor painting will be addressed, such as portability of one’s setup, palette choices and color mixing as it relates to observational painting. Students will be encouraged to work quickly and loosely in oils or acrylic*, embracing the challenges of changing of weather and light unique to plein air painting. Phyllis also plans to demo for a short time each day so that students can witness how a painting might be developed over several sittings. *Watercolor painters are welcome in this class, but watercolor technique will not be taught. The issues of color, composition etc. remain the same for all media.
